KUGLICA Theatre

KUGLICA

The KUGLICA theatre is a solo project of Marjan Kunaver, puppeteer, actor, puppet manipulator and musician. He has participated in projects of numerous children theatres and puppet shows for adults with artists of various improvisational theatres (Andrej Rozman Roza, Marko Derganc, the Ana Monro theatre, the Melita Osojnik theatre etc.) in the last 14 years. Some time ago he teamed up with his companion puppeteer Brane Vižintin and created the BALINKUGLA Theatre, which has made 3 puppet shows for adults (Žametna sociala, Kanarček, Turjaška Rozamunda). The Balinkugla theatre also released two CDs.

Marjan started his puppet career in the puppet group called ZOOM, and later in 1992 joined the FRU-FRU theatre of which he is still a member. With the FRU-FRU theatre he has participated in many international festivals across all Europe. He has played more than 20 different roles, cooperated with young and established directors, gained recognition also as a technologist and a puppet maker, musician, director of his own shows, but mostly as an outstanding puppeteer.

Marjan is, like most puppeteers, interested in all elements of the theatre, but his speciality is puppet technology. He has become one of the most exciting artisans of puppet technology in our country. He is active in developing his skills in this field, so in 2002 he took part in an international summer course at a puppet school in Charleville (Institut International de la Marionnette) in France, taught by the animatronics expert Zaven Paré from the Jim Henson Studios in USA. Equpped with this newly gained knowledge, he went on to make two shows, namely The Swineherd with Barbara Hieng Samobor as the director, performed by the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre (in 2004) and The Three Little Pigs by the Kuglica Theatre, in which manipulation of the puppets is electronic. In 2006 he further developed his skills in Charleville, mentored by the Green Ginger Theatre from Great Britain, where he learnt more about the muppets and learnt about the use of latex in the modern puppet technology. In 2009 he returned to Charleville to further develop his skills in making and animation of marionettes under the mentorship of famous Stephen Mottram, one of the world masters of string puppets.
